Julian Zehr, I’m working in Unity to build out prototypes but it may be a few more months before anything is shown off. In addition to some work on an AR enabled book(As a contributor not the lead author), I am still interested in further involvement in the industry.

Currently situated in the Midwest I can attest to not knowing many others who fully grasp the capabilities of VR/AR today. Some haven’t even heard of an HTC Vive, and the rest have only a passing knowledge of today’s HMDs. It will take an intersection of already popular media to bring VR to the limelight.

The Ready Player One film will likely help push the envelope, but my assumption is we are ~3 years out from the first truly big wave of users. That wave will come from those with an interest in professional gaming. eSports players with large followings diving in and sharing VR with their communities who then start adopting the hardware precipitously. This is assuming price drops, hardware improvements, and AAA experiences.

The best we can do now is share the benefits of VR and design experiences that add more value to a player’s life than the time/money required to get started in VR.
