90 days of VR, 20 days in

Today is day 20 of my 90 day VR experiment, and I’m still going strong.

My aim for these 90 days is to write about VR every day, and spend at least an hour immersed in virtual reality. As you might imagine I have also found myself speaking about VR more often to people I meet, as well as brainstorming the future of VR on a near constant basis.

Today I discovered there is a VR lounge in Boulder, Colorado located on Pearl Street.

For those who aren’t familiar with Boulder, Pearl Street is a central attraction of the city consisting of multiple city blocks of outdoor shopping, cafes, restaurants, and businesses such as design studios. For a VR Arcade to open up on Pearl Street in Boulder someone with access to money must believe in the future of virtual reality.

Today I had not one, but three people tell me that they’re ready to purchase a virtual reality headset.

I make it a point not to shove the idea of VR down the throats of those I meet. No one enjoys being sold to through brute force. I aim to talk about virtual reality and its implications as they relate to whatever subjects are of interest to the other party. It happens that virtual reality is a transformative technology for most any subject imaginable, making it approachable for most anyone.

Today I discussed the feasibility of opening a VR Arcade in downtown Kansas City.

Virtual reality has not reached popularity in midwestern cities such as Kansas City, but most everyone has at least heard of VR. Given easy access, people’s curiosity would lead them to at least trying virtual reality for a few minutes. If a well placed VR arcade offered 15 free minutes to new users and the frequent passersby, a substantial customer base could be built in any American city.

Today I continued an exercise regime centered in virtual reality.

As I have posted before, I believe virtual reality to be bringing fitness back to gamers. Personally, I use virtual reality as a means to workout at least 5 days a week for an hour at a time. Hopping in the competitive multiplayer VR title Smashbox Arena I engage in body weight HIIT exercises between rounds of gameplay. For three months now I have used virtual reality to stay active and have noticed an improvement to my posture.

Today I discovered one of my blog posts would be the subject of a podcast.

The Frontier Podcast shares tech articles from across the internet pertaining to the future of technology, and the bleeding edge of technology today. I’m humbled to have an article of mine be shared by such a talented group and can’t wait to learn a new perspective on the future of virtual reality. The article in question “Breaking a sweat in VR, the future of fitness” airs this week.

20 days in an I’m not sure this is even the tip of the iceberg.

Virtual reality has the power to change how we live, work, play, and interact with each other on a daily basis. Books like Ready Player One paint a vivid picture of what is already possible with today’s technology. What comes next is anyone’s guess.

I for one could not be more excited for the power virtual reality holds as a tool to democratize education, entertainment, and the human experience. Here’s to the next 70 days of writing on virtual reality!

Today is Day 20 of my 90 day VR experiment. Join me here for a daily dose of virtual reality design, game play, speculation, and most importantly: adventure.
